DOWNTOWN. A favorite since 1959, Barberian's is a traditional steakhouse set in an 1860 home, with the expected dark woods, white linens and framed artwork. Steaks come in various sizes and preparations ­ char-broiled, bacon-wrapped or topped with peppercorn or béarnaise sauce. All are accompanied by garlic bread, kosher pickles, and a potato or rice. Other choices include ribs, salmon and rack of lamb. The after-theatre menu also offers cheese or beef fondue for two. DOWNTOWN. The rustic stone, wood and leather decor of Canyon Creek is the perfect counterpart for its menu of steaks, fish and chops. Steak purists will be delighted with their options ­ simply grilled top quality beef, served with salad and potato or rice. Of course, there are other equally good choices, including cedar planked salmon, double cut pork chops, lamb and veal chops, and a fabulous chipotle sirloin. Save room for the signature dessert: bread pudding studded with brandy-soaked cranberries and white and dark chocolate chunks. Solid wine list.

DOWNTOWN. Housed in the elegant 1917 Toronto Harbour Commission building, this upscale steakhouse sets the standard in Toronto. Steaks are king, whether you're a ribeye kind of person or you prefer a porterhouse, Harbour 60 accommodates. The prime rib is second to none, as well, but if you're not in the mood for steak, the veal chops and grilled ahi are excellent choices. An award-winning wine list stretches to over 20 pages, with over 700 selections, and desserts are more than worthy of their stylish surroundings.

DOWNTOWN. Part of a small, historic steakhouse chain, Hy's is something of a Toronto institution, and it is a lovely place to enjoy a special night out. Perfectly aged steaks are the draw, with several cuts and preparations available, from an expertly charcoal broiled NY strip to a more elaborate filet mignon topped with crab and hollandaise. The Cajun spice rubbed ribeye is a winner, but one of the most popular choices is prime rib served with Yorkshire pudding. Sides include beer battered onion rings, fresh spinach or asparagus, and grilled tomatoes.

DOWNTOWN. Founded in 1971 in Vancouver, The Keg is a popular casual steakhouse chain with many locations across North America. The Jarvis Street outpost is situated in supposedly haunted mansion, but don't let that dissuade you from visiting. Enjoy a flavorful steak grilled to your specifications, sided by a huge baked potato. There's also chicken, baked salmon, ribs, and a nice selection of share-able sides like asparagus, sautéed mushrooms and cheesy cauliflower.
